DBDPE vs Deca-BDE: Why Decabromodiphenyl Ethane Is the Preferred Choice
Reactive vs Additive Flame Retardants: How to Choose
What is TBBPA?
Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), CAS 79-94-7, is the highest-volume brominated flame retardant worldwide. It contains about 59% bromine and is a white crystalline powder. TBBPA is unusual because it is used both as a reactive flame retardant and as an additive.
Reactive use in epoxy resins
In printed circuit boards, TBBPA is reacted into the epoxy resin backbone. Because it becomes part of the polymer, it does not migrate, which is ideal for FR-4 laminates and other electronic substrates. This reactive route accounts for the majority of global TBBPA consumption.
Additive use
As an additive, TBBPA is blended into ABS and HIPS, typically with antimony trioxide. It is also the feedstock for derivatives such as TBBPA bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) and brominated epoxy oligomers used where lower migration is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CAS number of TBBPA?
TBBPA (tetrafbromobisphenol A) has CAS number 79-94-7 and a bromine content of about 59%.
Is TBBPA reactive or additive?
Both. TBBPA is used reactively in epoxy circuit-board laminates and as an additive flame retardant in styrenics such as ABS and HIPS.
