DBDPE vs Deca-BDE: Why Decabromodiphenyl Ethane Is the Preferred Choice
What is DBDPE?
Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), CAS 84852-53-9, is an additive brominated flame retardant with a bromine content of about 82%. It is a free-flowing white powder that is thermally stable up to roughly 350 C, which makes it suitable for engineering plastics that are processed at high temperatures. Because it is not a polybrominated diphenyl ether, DBDPE is widely used as the direct replacement for Deca-BDE.
Main applications
- Polyolefins (PP, PE) for wire and cable, film and moulded parts
- Styrenics such as HIPS and ABS
- Engineering plastics including PBT, PA6 and PA66
- Thermoset resins, rubber, adhesives and textile back-coatings
Typical loading is 10-20% by weight depending on the polymer and the flame-retardancy target, used together with antimony trioxide as a synergist.
DBDPE and antimony trioxide ratio
DBDPE is almost always paired with antimony trioxide (ATO). A bromine-to-antimony ratio of about 3:1, which corresponds to a DBDPE:ATO weight ratio of roughly 3:1 to 4:1, gives the best balance of flame retardancy and cost in most systems. Fine-tuning the ratio lets compounders reach UL 94 V-0 while keeping mechanical properties.
Why buyers choose DBDPE
DBDPE offers high bromine content, excellent thermal stability, low volatility and good UV resistance. It has become the standard choice for manufacturers migrating away from Deca-BDE while keeping existing formulations and processing windows largely unchanged.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CAS number of DBDPE?
DBDPE (decabromodiphenyl ethane) has CAS number 84852-53-9 and a bromine content of about 82%.
What is the typical DBDPE to antimony trioxide ratio?
A DBDPE to antimony trioxide weight ratio of about 3:1 to 4:1 is typical, giving a bromine-to-antimony ratio near 3:1.
Is DBDPE a replacement for Deca-BDE?
Yes. DBDPE is the most common drop-in replacement for Deca-BDE because it has similar performance but is not a polybrominated diphenyl ether.
