FR-245 Flame Retardant: A Guide for Styrenics
Flame Retardants for Polyamide (Nylon) and PBT
The challenge with PP
Polypropylene burns readily and drips, so reaching UL 94 V-0 or V-2 requires effective flame retardant plus drip control. Brominated additives with antimony trioxide are the workhorse solution.
Recommended products
For PP the usual choices are DBDPE and the TBBPA ether derivatives. DBDPE gives high bromine content and thermal stability. BDDP (TBBPA bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether), CAS 21850-44-2) and HW-972 (CAS 97416-84-7) are aliphatic-bromine products that are efficient in PP at lower loadings and are widely used for V-2 grades, pipes, film and fibre.
Drip and process control
A small PTFE anti-drip agent helps PP reach V-0. Keep melt temperature controlled to avoid degrading the flame retardant, and ensure good dispersion for consistent results.
Frequently Asked Questions
What flame retardant works in polypropylene?
DBDPE, BDDP (TBBPA bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether)) and HW-972, used with antimony trioxide, are common choices for flame retardant polypropylene.
How do you stop polypropylene dripping in UL 94?
A small amount of PTFE anti-drip agent, combined with the right flame retardant loading, helps PP achieve a V-0 rating.
