Sodium Bromide (NaBr) in Oilfield Applications
Clear Brine Fluids: Density Ranges and Formulation
Density ranges
Calcium chloride brine reaches about 1.39 g/cm3 (11.6 ppg); calcium bromide reaches about 1.70 g/cm3 (14.2 ppg). Blends of the two cover the gap economically.
Cost versus density
Calcium chloride is cheaper, so operators use as much CaCl2 as the required density allows, topping up with calcium bromide only to reach higher densities. This minimises cost per barrel.
Selection logic
Choose the lowest-cost blend that meets the target density and is compatible with the formation. For high-pressure zones, calcium bromide or zinc bromide blends are required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is denser, calcium chloride or calcium bromide?
Calcium bromide is denser, reaching about 1.70 g/cm3 versus about 1.39 g/cm3 for calcium chloride.
Why blend calcium chloride with calcium bromide?
Blending uses cheaper calcium chloride for base density and adds calcium bromide only to reach higher densities, minimising cost.
