Clear Brine Fluids: Density Ranges and Formulation
Handling and Storage of Oilfield Bromide Brines
Reaching the highest densities
When a well needs more than about 14 ppg, calcium bromide alone is not enough. Blends of calcium bromide and zinc bromide (CaBr2/ZnBr2) reach densities above 19 ppg while remaining solids-free.
Handling considerations
Zinc bromide brines are acidic and more aggressive, so correct PPE, corrosion inhibition and material compatibility are essential. Crystallisation temperature must be checked for cold environments.
Applications
These brines are used in deep, high-pressure, high-temperature completions where maximum hydrostatic pressure is required without solids.
Frequently Asked Questions
How dense can zinc bromide brine get?
Calcium bromide and zinc bromide blends can exceed 19 ppg (about 2.3 g/cm3).
Are zinc bromide brines corrosive?
They are acidic and more aggressive than calcium brines, so corrosion inhibition and proper material selection are important.
